10 Reasons to Dress Up

February 7, 2010
I abhor sweats and Uggs. They’re unflattering, unfashionable, and unappealing – and yet, 80% of the girls at my high school wear sweats and Uggs on a daily basis. Quelle horreur! The widespread popularity of these trends is completely baffling to me; given a choice between dressing up and dressing down, I’d always choose the former. Without further ado, here are my top ten reasons to “dress up” – whatever that constitutes for you, whether  that means dresses and heels or simply something other than Uggs.
  1. First and foremost, fashion should be fun! Set aside a few minutes each morning to play with your clothes: experiment with color combinations, copy your favorite celebrity’s style, or draw inspiration from a runway collection. Enjoy putting together an outfit that makes you feel good!
  2. It won’t be long before you’re stuck in the corporate world where office-wear reigns supreme, so exercise your sartorial freedom now. Pair soft floral prints with denim for a prairie look or step into a pair of fuchsia cage heels while you still can. Your future self will thank you!
  3. On a similar note, you’re only young once. Carpe diem – seize the day. Always wanted to try a sequined mini dress? There’s no better time than the present; chances are, you’re in the best shape of your life right now. Take a page from Beyoncé’s book: show off what you got.
  4. The sweatshirts and sweatpants that so many girls favor are universally unflattering. You deserve to look fabulous every day! If  you’re firmly in the “sweatpants are so comfy!” camp, I dare you to wear a cozy cashmere sweater or thick knit tights and tell me they aren’t equally as comfortable.
  5. When I “dress up”, I feel prettier, energized, and more confident. Nothing can beat that feeling.
  6. It’s so easy to conform and blend in with everyone else. When you “dress up”, you stand out. I’m not necessarily saying you need to emulate Tavi to get attention, but wearing an outfit that sets you apart from the rest of the crowd can be a major confidence booster.
  7. Fashion is a form of self-expression and a form of art. Express yourself!
  8. Whether you’re snapped by The Sartorialist or other girls compliment your penchant for unique accessories, every outfit is an opportunity  to inspire others by putting a little creativity and effort into what you wear.
  9. Blair Waldorf wouldn’t approve of Uggs, so why wear them?
  10. If you’re reading my blog, you have an interest in fashion – so “dress up” and let everyone see how fantastic your style is!

#5 and #8 are definitely my favorite personal reasons to dress up as often as I can…but then again, I’m human, so I do have my fair share of hoodie + jeans days. I really love your blog, you’ve got a very fresh perspective!

    haha, wow, I love #9!

    also #2 is so true

I keep wondering why you don’t have your own column in a magazine, but then I read the top of this entry and saw you’re still in high school :(

Thank you! You have no idea how much your comment means to me. I’d love to have my own column! In the meantime, this blog will have to do. :)

I love reading your blog! At first I was deterred by your age, but you’re very mature for a high school girl!
