Inspired by Anna Sui: Tonal Colors and Prints

February 19, 2010

One of my favorite Fall 2010 collections was Anna Sui. Sui always creates colorful, hippie-esque looks; this collection did not disappoint.

One sure way to emulate Anna Sui this season is to experiment with mixing prints of the same color. From head to toe, Sui embraced patterned hats, bold dresses, printed tights, and even embellished shoes for a loud, boho chic look. The effect was intensified by varying materials all in the same color. Above, Sui played with youthful combinations of magenta and orange (left, right) and cream and orange (center). While I love to translate runway looks into real life trends, it’s easy to go overboard on this one. How can you incorporate the essence of this runway look into your current wardrobe? Check out my take:

The paisley dress captures the youthful boho vibe of the collection and serves as the base of the outfit. From here, I added tonal accessories (tights, a bangle, and nail polish) to pick up the blue and purple details in the dress. I finished the outfit with fringed suede boots, which add to the hippie feel without furthering the blue and purple motif. The key to this look is to know when to draw the line: ground the ensemble in neutrals (the black background of the dress and the boots) and remember that less is more.
