Five Essential Summer Outfits

June 20, 2010

Every season comes with its inevitable outfits: fall needs the perfect back-to-school outfit, winter mandates heavy coats, and spring beckons little floral dresses. And what about summer? I’ve put together five essential outfits to keep you covered this season.

As Paris Hilton says, “The only rule is don’t be boring and dress cute wherever you go. Life is too short to blend in.” Without further adieu, your guide to dressing cute this summer:

Outfit #1: A Day at the Beach

Beach

Top off a flirty, floral, and fabulous bikini with a sweet white dress. I’m loving the fold-over ruffle detail on this dress, which could work equally well on and off the beach. Accessorize with a pair of sunglasses that flatter your face and a glamorous sun hat – no shoes necessary! Take a long stroll along the shore and watch the heads turn as you pass.

Outfit #2: Lunch with the Girls

Lunch with friends

This adorable Topshop dress takes the guesswork out of mixed prints by effortlessly combining stripes and florals. Cinch it at the waist with a braided belt in a neutral color and carry a neutral clutch. The pink and gold sandals tie the ensemble together and will be easy on your feet, so you’ll have no trouble walking across town for an ice cream cone after lunch!

Outfit #3: Family Barbecue

You’ll be running after your little cousins all afternoon in this breezy, casual outfit! Skip dresses and skirts (no Marilyn Monroe moments, please!) and anything you’re afraid to stain; instead, opt for a loose tank tucked into cuffed shorts. Grab a lightweight cardigan in case you’re cold and slip into a pair of red TOMS. (They’re for a great cause: every time you buy a pair, another pair is given to a child in need in Africa.) Showcase your stylish side with an embellished headband and a whimsical necklace.

Outfit #4: Night on the Town

Night Out on the Town

Whether you’re trying out that trendy new restaurant in the city or getting dolled up for a date, you’re sure to be a show-stopper in a mini dress in a bold color. Show off your legs with the pièce de resistance, your most incredible pair of heels. (I’m obsessed with the bow detail on these sandals!) Finish the look with a cool belt and a matching clutch and you’ll be the coolest girl in the room.

Outfit #5: Wedding Guests

Wedding Looks

I styled two looks for summer weddings, depending on the formality of the event. On the left, a sweet nude frock and clutch gets a major boost with red pumps that would make even Dorothy jealous. On the right, a stunning one-shouldered number is elegant when paired with understated accessories. When dressing for a wedding, keep a few tips in mind: dress fairly modestly (cover your shoulders if you’re in a church or temple), don’t wear white, and remember that this is the bride’s day to shine, not yours! (That being said, I am a firm believer in wearing lust-worthy shoes at all times. Go all out.)

Did I miss an occasion? Any other looks you’d like to see? Leave a comment and let me know!

xoxo Hannah
