Prom Flashback: 1982

May 26, 2011

For my second installment of my Prom Flashback series, I’m flashing back to my mom’s senior prom in 1982. She and her high school boyfriend Michael both wore white. I love that she kept her hair and makeup soft in order to let her dress shine. The gown’s sheer turtleneck was trendy for the era, but it played double duty by hiding her recent scar from open-heart surgery. As far as 1982 fashion goes, I’d say my mom did very well! What do you think?

(By the way, if her dress looks familiar, it’s because Jennifer Lopez totally stole it for the Golden Globes. Audrey from the Block came way before Jenny from the Block.)

Inspired? Submit your own prom photos (or your mom’s!):

  1. Email your glamorous, red carpet-worthy, funny, painfully outdated prom photos to hannahorenstein (at) yahoo (dot) com.
  2. In a few sentences, tell us about your look!
  3. Make sure to include your name (and the name of the dress wearer, if it’s someone other than yourself), the year, and a link to your blog or website if you have one.
  4. Spread the word! Share the contest with your friends through Facebook, Twitter, and your own blog.

I’ll be accepting submissions until June 4, when I’ll compile all the submissions into a prom-tastic blog post totally decked out in chiffon ruffles. There have already been some incredible entries (my favorite comes from 1990 – you’ll see why as soon as you see the photo!), but there’s always room for more.

xoxo Hannah

I love her dress! It could be a wedding dress! The sheer turtle neck is actually quite gorgeous!

My wedding dress did look so much like that. It had the same collar and was all lace, but it did not float off the dress, it was a V-neck with lace up to the the chin.

Looking at the first picture I can tell it was the year gypsy moth invasion that kept grandma jailed in the house all summer. Grandma lined the trees with tin foil and vaseline to prevent the worms from traveling up the trees and papa had to hose down the house that was completely covered with huge black, fuzzy worms.

As for your mother, she looked OK I guess.

    Love you.

It seems that 1982 could not make up its mind to stay in the 70s and or to adopt its 80s decade? It was a year combined bell bottoms with punk hairstyles.
